When this happens, you can loudly declare at the gate that “… I’m not willing to give up my seat to an air marshal. Why doesn’t he sit in economy for the next 14 hours…”.

That’s most of the time the only reason why they would take away your seat. Stating this out loud, so others can hear, usually freaks them out (passengers are not supposed to know this).
